Scripture Union Daily Guide 4th August 2025 Outline

Our God is perfect, and He wants us to be perfect too (Matthew 5:48). It was a lesson this privileged young man learned the hard way. Take a closer look at Matthew 19:16-17. The question is about a thing, but the answer is about a Person: What good thing…?”; “One who is good.” This man does lots of admirable good things, so much so that the parallel account in another Gospel remarked, “Jesus, looking at him, loved him.” (Mark 10:21). However, doing all those good things did not make him good by the standard God requires, which is nothing short of perfection (Matthew 19:21a)!

How was such an outstanding man to understand the distance between his goodness and God’s perfect standard? Jesus showed him that he valued his possessions more than he valued the Kingdom of God (Matthew 19:21b). Indeed, there is nothing and no one who is truly good – only God. What we now know was unknown to this man: Jesus Christ alone is good because He is God. Perfection resides in Him; and He alone can make us perfect.
